Refurbishing my Ikea lamps

I bought a pair of these lamps from IKEA about 5 years ago I think, when I first planned to move into our new home.

They were cream in colour, and really nice. Fits the ambiance I planned for my hall. Well, it still does, except that now the creamy porcelain base has gray marks from all the dust and some chipped surfaces from scrubbing them clean. The lamp shade has yellow ageing spots. Ugh!!!

Here’s what I did to refresh it.

  • IKEA lamp
  • Spray paint
  • IKEA fabric
  • Masking tape
  • Recycled paper

Old IKEA Lamp Glow Up

1. I picked up a can of spray paint in baby blue. I had my heart set on teal, but the store only had this shade of blue. I actually ended up liking it, so I went for it.

2. First, I unscrewed the bulbs and separated the shade from the base—basically, I unscrewed anything that could be removed.

3. Next, I used masking tape and plenty of recycled paper to cover the wires and the metal and plastic parts that hold the bulbs and shades. The goal was to protect the areas I didn’t want to get paint on.

Since the base of the lamp has holes, I taped paper inside the base to prevent paint getting in there. (it’s hollow and accessible from the bottom). There’s a place for a bulb there too.

4. Now, for the fun part. I sprayed two coats of paint on the base and left it overnight to ensure it was completely dry (I’m a bit particular like that).

5. For the shade, things got fun and a little sticky. I pulled out my Fabric Mod Podge and some leftover IKEA fabric. I measured around the shade and cut out two pieces of fabric (since I was using leftovers, I didn’t have one piece that fit perfectly).

I brushed Mod Podge onto the shade and glued the fabric on. I made sure the fabric on the outside was slightly wider—about 1.5 cm on both sides—so I could fold it over and glue it to the inside of the shade.

And that’s really all there is to it.
