Hi all,

I have a quick question. I would LIKE to attach a guitar wall hanger (see attached product photo) to my 5×5 Expedit. Ideally I would attach one hanger on the end panel so that the guitar would hang facing in the same direction as the shelves of the Expedit (see poorly-lit photo) and one other hanger would be attached on the end panel facing length-ways away from the Expedit.

I am very aware that this is likely not a “smart” idea but the guitars in question are both cheap, light and resilient so I’m not particularly worried. My question is: what is the most secure (or perhaps better put: least insecure) way of affixing the hangars to the Expedit? Any and all suggestions (other than “don’t do this”) would be very much appreciated!

  1. I would drill right through the expedit and put a small plate of metal on the other side [or large washers] to distribute the load. Use nuts and bolts instead of screws.

  2. Maybe you should drill all the way through the Expedit and make a fix at the other end, at the inside, I don’t know how to explain it. Like this: -I-I- II is the wall — the long screw.
    Guitars aren’t so heavy, be optimistic.

  3. I wouldn’t recommend glue. The glue might be strong enough, but you may “peel” the expedit veneer (happened on my malm bed).
    To be quite honest, I think you need to re-think the placing of the guitar. First, it will be in front of some of your shelves. If you need to access them, you will need to handle the guitar a lot, and that is never good for the guitar and shelf.
    But, if you really want the guitar there, firstly you need to make sure the shelf is secure. Then, your best bet would probably be an “L” or “U” woodworking brackets (the king you may use for pergolas and such).

    But maybe longer and with more screws. If in doubt, you can use really long screws to go all the way through and a nut on the end.

    How about a floor guitar stand?

    I myself have a couple of guitars on the wall above some shelves. They are sideways. Not really recommended if your actually play them as it may bend the neck. Mine are just decorative now, so not worried about that.

  4. This may not work for you if you already have a 4×4 or 5×5 Expedit, but my set up is the guitar with a regular wall mount, above a 2×2 Expedit with the shelf placement modified so that my amp fits in it.

    I suppose one other method would be to get some kind of non slip surface and lay the guitar on top of the Expedit.

  5. I just secured an expedit desk to a four by four expedit using shelf-brackets. If you use corse enough screws, you wont have any problems… Just don’t hang anything much heavier than a guitar on it…

  6. I would suggest looking into using cheap tool hangers, the wide ones that are used in hanging shovels etc…in garages. I have hung many guitars this way, they only need 1 hole/entrance point and are quite secure. Like the other commentators, you should be concerned about the freestanding shelf in general…a few pounds of guitars wont tip it.

  7. If the back of hanger is mostly smooth, how about a couple of Command strips? I know you can buy replacement packs without the hooks. The packaging will tell you the weight rating. I imagine you’ll want to keep an eye on the shelf, make sure the facing isn’t pulling away from the structure.

  8. I would suggest the use of molly anchor (not sure the english name but in french “cheville molly”) as Expedit is mostly hollow. For sure it will work 🙂

  9. I’d be most worried about screws pulling out of the shelving.
    Take three small pieces of 1/2″ plywood or hardwood as tall as the bracket. Make two about 3″ deep and sandwich them on each side of the vertical end gluing to the inside and outside of the side of the shelf and edge flush with front with a this layer of construction adhesive. Take 3rd piece and cut it as wide as the wood-expedit-wood sandwich then drill a pilot holes into to plywood and glue then screw in place. You know have a slolid U of strong wood wraped around the edge of the shelf unit. Paint to match (painting first would not cover the seams/screws and paint on inside would weaken the glue). Now mount the bracket to the wood and it should outlast the Expedit.

  11. I wouldn’t actually attach it to the upright – I don’t think they will hold a screw well. Perhaps a small square of wood to the back of your hanger – it would then be an inverted L. Then through this new piece of wood, drill a hole through it and a thin shelf. Bolt the wood to the shelf. You could get close to the upright, but not directly over it.

  12. Since the inside isn’t solid, a screw obviously won’t be very good. You might try driving a long dowel drilled through deep enough to grab onto the cardboard inside, through the guitar mount. Also glue the mount to the surface for stability.
