Hackers Help: Äpplarö outdoor shelves as indoor wall shelves

Hello all!
I need simple shelves for my office and came upon the Äpplarö outdoor shelves that are normally used to go with the wood panel of the same collection.

I’m planning to drill two holes on each bracket to secure it on the wall. From what I’ve seen on the photos on Ikea’s website, I’ll also need to saw the metal part that would normally hold on the wood panel.

Has anyone been successful with this hack or could recommend another solution?

Your opinion is more than welcome 🙂

  1. We actually did this hacks last year. The shelves were the exact width and depth we wanted, and we didn’t have the setup to easily cut wood to size. The shelves come without the brackets attached. We stained them slightly darker and just used standard shelf brackets to hang them and they worked out great. We moved and brought them with and reinstalled them in a different home office. Let me know if you would like photos or if you have questions.

    1. We got the Äpplarö system (bench, wood panel, and selves) for our entryway, however the color is redish compared to the rest of our furniture. I tried to stain it, but it seems to be coated and doesn’t hold the stain. You mentioned staining the shelves darker – could you please tell me what you used and if you had to sand them beforehand?

  2. Thank you for you suggestions! I considered reclaimed wood, but I’m not in an area where it’s easily accessible. That’s why I considered these shelves instead. I’ll look around again, I might stumble upon a good deal 🙂

  3. That seems like a lot of hassle to get some simple wooden shelves on simple brackets. Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to just buy some brackets and wood? Recycled wood would work well.

  4. How about attaching a piece of wood to the wall so that the shelf can hook onto the piece like it would normally attach to the panel?

  5. I believe that cutting the hook off the mount and drilling holes would work quite well. Make sure to use proper mounting hardware for your wall type, and don’t put a lot of weight on it unless you can match it up to some framing studs.

    I think you could also use an Ekby mount. They come in a ton of styles, though none match the stain of the Äpplarö series they do have a few that are aluminum like the Ekby Robert (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30140004/).

  6. I took a look at the assembly instructions… I think you have 3 options… 1) for flush mount, cut off the hooks and drill holes for screws — at least 4. Mount into studs. 2) Buy a panel and cut it to size. Mount panel to wall, and mount shelf on panel as normal. 3) You could make a variation of a french cleat… take a board that’s the same width as the wall mount supports are tall and a little thicker than the hook is deep — hard to gauge from the pics, but I’m guessing a 1″ x 5″ would be close. Cut a slot for the hook on the top of the board. Mount the board to the wall, and attach the shelf as if you had the appropriate panel.
