Hackers Help: Has anyone tried cutting Oxberg glass door to fit half-height Billy?

There is one thing about Billy I find very bugging. Why is there no Oxberg glass door for the half-height (41 3/4 “) Billys? There is only a solid wooden door for that size.

Then the idea of cutting the big Oxberg glass doors to fit the small Billys. I measured it and it should be possible.

Has anybody ever tried that?

  2. I have successfully completed my sister’s Billy bookcase with the 4 cutdown Oxberg glass doors and, I can honestly say, it looks significantly better than the unit I saw at Ikea with the Morliden doors. (Shame I can’t post pictures on this thread).

    I have had a bit of correspondence with Ikea over this issue. Here is an official response from Ikea Sweden explaining why they don’t stock the Oxberg glass doors in this size:

    “The overall strategy for HFB 2 is to widen the offer and start moving away from our 4 families one of which is BILLY. This we know is what consumers are demanding from us. This means taking away the dept off the offer and here the doors were impacted in BILLY to be more efficient. The glass/panel doors offers the same solution. At the same time two half doors so to speak is actually technically not possible with the new construction.”

    If you can actually understand this statement you’re doing better than I am!!

  3. I have successfully cut down a 192 x 40cm white Oxberg all glass door (902.756.17) to make a 97 x 40cm glass door. If there was a way of posting photos on here I would do.

    I just need to see how this looks on my sister’s Billy Bookcase before I do 3 more. Looks good to me, though.

  4. I have just realised that you wouldn’t be able to use the half panel/half glass doors as the section with the two hinge positions, that you’d need, is on the panel half.
    So, you could only do this with an all glass 40 x 192cm Oxberg door. I would recommend finding a way to remove the top section of glass before you took a saw to the door.

  5. Bit of a disappointing response from IKEA to my Facebook post:

    Hi Steve, I am sorry that we don’t sell any OXBERG glass doors, 40 x 97cm. I am unsure why and it doesn’t look like we will anytime soon. Thanks, Rebecca IKEA UK.

    I have asked for my request to be passed to “the powers that be” i.e. the management team, as there must be a reason that they don’t stock them. I have highlighted the measures some people are considering taking just to get this size door.

  6. Exact same problem I’ve come across.

    For the Oxberg doors, you can get 40 x 192cm full glass doors, 40 x 192cm half panel/half glass, even the small 40 x 35cm doors

    (for the height extension units) in glass……..but not 40 x 97cm!! It’s maddening as it completely defies logic.

    The Morliden grey, metal, glass doors look very ugly on a white Billy bookcase!

    It does look as though the hinges would fit if you cut down the 40 x 192cm doors. I would recommend you got the half panel/half

    glass doors if you were going to try this, to avoid any chance of trying to cut through glass in the rebate.

    You’re looking at spending an extra £10 per door over what you should have been paying for a 40 x 97cm door.

    I have emailed IKEA to ask why they do not do this size Oxberg door in glass and to see if they have plans to sell them in the

    near future. Maybe if a few more did the same they may start supplying them.

  8. Hi sorry for my English: Perhaps its easier to take a halfsize wood door and you bring it the “glas /window man” (dont know how this job is called) and he puts you a glas instead of wood into the door?!

  9. Did you measure where the hinges need to go as well? Also, you can get Morliden glass doors at 1/2 height. If you need it look wood frame, you should be able to get similar looking vinyl wrap to cover up the metal frame of the Morliden glass doors.
