Hackers Help: Can I extend Fredde Desk’s Top Shelf (Metal)

Would it be possible to extend the top shelf on the FREDDE? The sides are metal so I don’t know if brackets can be mounted to it.

I want to use it to keep my laptop when I feel like having a standing desk.

Hi! what about getting a piece of melamine/plywood/some ikea table top cut to the length between the upright supports and however deep you need for your laptop when you are standing. what comes to mind for hardward would be the brackets from a hand-on-door kitchen towel holder, one that hangs on the top of the cabinet door. Or maybe simply small L-brackets. Attach them to the rear edge of the new shelf surface so it forms a hook that will catch the back edge of the Fredde’s top shelf. Then, attach a thin strip of wood or similar (maybe 10mm thick?) to the underside of the new shelf surface as a cleat to stop the shelf from sliding backwards. think something like this:

    the “L” is the cabinet hanger bracket, the “P” is the cleat/stopper block screwed to the underside of the new “desk” surface.

    This way, if you put your weight on the front of the new laptop surface, the shelf will try to tip down, but it is held down in the back by the hanger brackets, and the cleat prevents it from sliding backwards.

    Side benefit, to remove this new surface, just lift the front and slide it back enough to be able to clear the back hangers, and you could simply store it under the desk, or reposition it to the lower shelf for a larger surface for your monitor, etc..
