Whether you’re sharing a workspace with a partner, a roommate, or just need more room to spread out, this simple yet genius IKEA hack creates a long, stylish double desk with plenty of storage—perfect for two.
And the best part? It’s totally customizable to fit your space, style, and budget.
We wanted a desk setup that could comfortably fit two people working side-by-side, with enough drawers and cabinets to hide away all the office clutter.
What we came up with is a clean-lined, minimalist dual workstation using just a few IKEA pieces. It’s incredibly easy to put together—no advanced DIY skills needed.
IKEA items used:
- 1 HAMMARP countertop (Other kitchen countertops like the KARLBY will also work)
- 3 METOD kitchen cabinets (80 cm height) with MAXIMERA drawers
How to Build an IKEA Double Desk:
All you really need are a countertop and a few base cabinets. The cabinets act as the legs and storage, while the countertop ties it all together.
We went with the HAMMARP countertop for a natural, classic look, but you can choose any finish that matches your decor.
For the base, we used METOD kitchen cabinets (which are similar to the SEKTION in the US). We chose to use IKEA kitchen cabinets instead of other IKEA drawer pedestals like the ALEX, as we find the kitchen cabinets sturdy, spacious, and easily configurable to our home office needs.
Furthermore, the MAXIMERA drawers extend fully, compared to the ALEX drawers.
We preferred more drawers, but if you like open shelving, go for it! You can also add a UTRUSTA pull-out shelf for your printer if needed. This desk setup lets you mix and match to create your ideal combo.
To assemble:
- Position the three METOD base cabinets evenly spaced apart.
- Lay the countertop across the top.
- Secure with brackets or screws (optional, depending on stability needs).
That’s it—you’re done!
Want to Customize It Further?
For a smaller or solo setup: Cut the worktop (or get a shorter one) and use two cabinets instead of three. You’ll still have ample workspace and storage without taking up too much room.
Adjust the height: Standard METOD cabinets are 80 cm tall, making the desk height just right for bar stools. If you prefer a lower desk, swap them out for 60 cm cabinets.
Regular desk height is 28 to 30 inches (71 to 76 cm). If you want it at regular desk height, build a base to raise it or set the 60cm METOD cabinets on 10cm legs.
Pick your seating: We used BERNHARD bar stools, but if you want something adjustable, the JANINGE bar stool is a great pick. Height matters when it comes to comfort, so go with what works for your body and desk height.
