Hi, I want to paint a BESTA furniture because it’s not in the colors I want. So I bought some paint and tried to apply the paint on the furniture. The problem is, went the paint is dry, if I scratch it with my nail it comes off. It’s like the paint is not adhering to the furniture.

Anybody can help me? Do I need to buy a different paint or a primer to apply on the furniture before painting?

  1. The Frenchic lazy range will go straight on without primer, although i would still recommend rubbing with a scotch cloth first, or light sand.

  2. I would recommend heavy sanding for its surface (or washing it with liquid that is used when washing painted surface). And I also recommend better paint, something else than water-soluble. Unless you use primer first. Primer is must if you use regular paint.
    I have used paint that goes well for wood, woodish material, window frames and metal. In Finland it’s called Maalarin valkolakka as Painter’s white varnish. It’s paint with warnish on it. No one can fail with that kind of stuff.

  3. I did paint my BESTA doors (the cheap plain white ones). At first I sanded them, then used a primer. And then I used an acrylic paint that contains polyurethane (which makes the paint stronger). I applied as many coats as possible. So far they are holding up well. I did the same with the PAX sliding doors

  4. you should sand a lot, specially on the corners.
    Sometimes, some points of the surfaces need a special cure

  5. You need to rough up the surface a bit with some sandpaper and then spray it with primer. The primer will only stick if you rough up the surface – it will not stick to something like a laminate which is slick. After you prime it, then you can go to town and paint it however you like ☺️

  6. I used Zinsser 1-2-3 primer and it worked well. You have to let it cure long enough though. That’s the trick. A week? No sanding necessary! I painted my hutch red and it came out fantastic!

  7. Sanding the surface with sandpaper to rough up the old paint will help the new paint to stick better. A coat of primer will also help, but you’ll still need to rough up the original surface via sanding for the primer to stick to it.

  8. There are primiers specific for laminated furniture. Make sure you use one of those. Also, give it a light sand before the primer and apply two coats of it.

  9. I’ve had luck painting IKEA stuff by sanding first, applying an OIL-based primer and then paint. The primer seems to make all the difference. Just paint or using a water-based primer has led to chipping.
