Digging through knotted necklaces when you’re already running late? Julia from Germany turned two IKEA picture frames and some hardware store finds into a jewelry organizer that actually works—for less than a fancy coffee.
“As I have quite a lot of jewelry, I decided to display it in a picture frame,” she explains how she came up with this jewelry organizer and display hack.

What You’ll Need:
- IKEA picture frame (Julia found 2 RIBBA picture frames for €4 in the as-is section. New frames like the RÖDALM will also work for this hack)
- Chicken wire
- Cork
- Carbon tube
- Hooks and hangers (leftover curtain hangers work perfectly)
- Basic tools: drill, wire cutter
How to Build Your Custom Jewelry Organizer
1. Wire Frame for Dangling Earrings
Ditch the plastic cover and backing. Cut chicken wire to fit the frame and secure it with the metal tabs that normally hold the clear plastic. Hook your earrings through the wire openings. Done.
2. Cork Board for Stud Earrings
Same process, but swap chicken wire for cork. Push studs directly into the cork. They stay put, and you’ll never lose another backing.
3. Hooks for Necklaces
- Drill two holes in your frame. Julia positioned the holes near the top of the frame so the necklaces hang within the frame.
- Grab a carbon tube from a railway modeling or craft shop. It’s cheap, lightweight, and slightly flexible, making it easy to work with. Cut it to length if needed.
- Slide on your hangers before installing. Julia used leftover IKEA curtain hangers, but any small hooks or S-hooks will work
- Insert the tube through both drilled holes, and you’ve got yourself a custom necklace bar
- Hang your necklaces and admire your handiwork!
Make It Your Own
The beauty of Julia’s system is that it’s totally adaptable. Got more necklaces? Add another row of hooks. Need more earring space? Make multiple frames. Want different colors? Spray paint the frames or use fabric instead of cork.
You could even create a whole gallery wall of jewelry frames—different sizes, different storage solutions, all coordinated to match your bedroom aesthetic.
So next time you’re at IKEA, swing by the as-is section and grab a couple of IKEA picture frames.
