not quite a hack but it’s a nice desk organizer idea from diana.

“so, i don’t know if this is considered an ikea hack. but recently there was a growing mess of papers and knick knacks on the tray in our hallway where we keep our keys and such. i got the idea to use the ikea plastis ice cube tray to organize our things and it made all the difference. what once was a totally unintelligible pile of receipts and coupons and note pads is now easily accessible and organized.”

  1. I have a similar IKEA tray that makes small, triangular ice “cubes” and have found it worthless, as well — so worthless that when the prior occupant moved, she left it behind!
    Perhaps useful as a coin tray, to separate denominations? Or to sort color-coded paper clips? Or to keep matching earrings together?

  2. I think this deserves to be regarded as a hack. I don’t see why you actually have to cut into something (or disassemble it) in order to ‘hack’ it. Can’t you just see it in a totally new context? Turn it upside down and call it a lampshade, for instance?

  7. Now that’s a useful tip for an otherwise useless item… I bought this exact same Ikea ice cube tray last summer, thinking it would be great for tall drinks (almost like an ice cube stir stick). However, I found the limpness of the silicone to be too flimsy – it would spill whenever I filled it up with water. I ended up having to use a plate underneath the ice cube tray. Eventually, the ice cube tray was relegated to the back of the cupboard – now I can dig it back out to sort my receipts! Great tip, thanks!
