Materials: Ivar shelving units

Description: I work for a small architecture firm in southern California, and last summer I started working from home 3 days a week. I had a small workspace setup prior to that, but it was inadequate for actual day to day work. I needed storage space for books, my computer, stuff, and a big enough desk surface to roll out drawings.

So, I borrowed, and slightly modified the way we set the office workstations up at my firm. We use Ivar’s as deskstands with door blanks as the desk surface. The setup I’ve done at home is similar, but I’ve used Europly plywood as the desktop. For a small bedroom space, this arrangement works really well.

  2. Hi Kyle,

    I’m looking to do something similar. Is that desk height 49″? I’m looking @ Ikea’s web site and it appears as though 49″ is the shortest they make the side pieces… or did you cut some down?

  3. Also, from the piles of paper on your desk, you might need to consider a scanner…Maybe a Fujitsu scanner.

  4. Nice. I’d probably want to round off the desktop corners at the near end, to avoid stabbing myself in the thigh with the square corner.

  5. (none): The far corner is supported with 4-hole metal straps. I can take a photo if you’d like. But, very simple.

    (Joni): With the exception of a 2-drawer file cabinet, all the base units are Ivar units from Ikea. I should say however, the inside corner (books and computer) Ivar’s are 12″ deep shelving units, while the drawer and outer base units are 24″ deep.

    (Anoymous and Cuteworkz): I’d be happy to send more photos. I’ll see if Jules has a way to add to this post. If not, I’ll post a link to some other images.
