Materials: KVART (wall spotlight), mixed media

Description: Häxan is a composition of more or less used goods. Most of the things are found in various boxes and barns.

The “KVART” wall spotlights were used for some months as they were meant to be used. Somehow me and my wife found them quite dull so I decided to refine them.

  3. Hahaha, I can imagine entering ‘clean’ bedroom (I assume this because the wall looks ‘normal’, no posters etc.) and seeing this! So weird, in a good way.
    Did you glue the doll?

  4. wow… when I came to this site I never would have expected to find so many trolls. People who find they need to express their negative views as if everyone else is in dire need of them. Congrats, trolls, for ruining a such a creative and forward-thinking platform. You must not be able to understand the concept of Ikea’s own ‘thinking outside the box’ as you express extreme distaste to anything different. Could you get any more mundane? I usually restrain from spreading negativity, but you special bunch seem allergic to anything positive.

    Congrats to Gustafsson for creating something entirely original… you inspire us to think differently and apply new purposes to ordinary things. Don’t let the nay-sayers keep you from posting more unique stuff! 😉

  8. Thank you all for your response. Especially the anonymous narrow-minded comments were entertaining to read (though I feel sorry for the people who lives around you). I have full respect for people who doesn’t share my taste but I find it hard to stand dictators. Fortunately there is a cure for stupidity – education!
    Finally to all you constructive people out there – Thanks!

  11. I love it!
    It reminds me of my flat before having my son. “Eery dolls”, “eerie rocking horses’ heads”, “eerie bits of porcelaine dolls growing out of a plantpot… In fact, besides thinking “Cool! enough with pretty flowers!” my first thought was “How do they keep the doll’s eyes closed in that position?”
    In downtown Barcelona (Spain) you can find lots of “eerie” stuff like this at alternative bars/clubs and many people’s homes.

  12. Hmmm, really stretching my imagination here. The only thing I find remotely redemptive about this piece is that it will provide LIGHT, although I can imagine the shadows of that upside-down-doll on the wall…hmmm…art? Not for me, but to each their own I guess…

    And if you think your goody – goody comments are more civilized, you have to revise.
    I don’t like it I say it! I didn’t choose any offensif word that you cannot stand. And while I cannot ask Jules something, why you can answer for her?
    And yes, while I am a reader of her blog, I can suggest things too. I don’t see anything wrong.

  14. lol…..have you ever noticed the anontroll is the least imaginative, most humourless creature there is….no biggie, nobody but himself has to live with his own contemptuous nature. that’s why they tend to live under bridges by themselves ;P

    the more i look at this, the more i like it, actually. i think what’s ‘missing’ (for me) is some sort of framework….painted colour-block panel behind it, or actual wooden frame or both…that anchors the whole piece. the cords could be partly tucked behind a frame too….just a thought is all.

    at any rate, i can appreciate mr. gustafsson’s quirky humour and willingness to step out of the box. i still think this piece has great potential for random and tangential inspiration. the doll sorta creeped me out too, until i blocked it out of view and realized how wrong it looked without it.

    anyway, congrats on creating a bit of a controversial stir here lol….always a good thing.

  15. What a shame that the Scandinavian tradition of trolls is so alive here on a very fine site.

    Shame on the nasty anonymous Gollums.

    I find the art brut sensibility of the piece engaging and the connection with the working method of artists like Jospeh Cornell (or the combines of Rauschenberg) also intrigues me.

    It actually reminds me a bit of Joe Brainard’s often eerie use of babies–like the Kewpie doll.

    I particularly am impressed with the jarring discordant use of color.

    There’s a way to dislike something without making yourself sound like an uncivilized lout.

    You anonymous trolls didn’t even come close.

    And way to go, telling the site’s creator that you run the show.

    We’re all proud of what you “achieved” here.

    Which is nothing.

    This is Jules’s site, and she can do and post whatever she likes. I for one appreciate the breadth of ideas here and the differences. No, I agree that it isn’t very “hacky” this, but it’s fun to see nonetheless. My only quibble would be that I don’t see “the witch” in the shape? (häxan = the witch)

  19. well, i can only speak for myself when i say that i come here for inspiration, and even though a particular hack might not be to my personal taste, it doesn’t mean it has no value. for example, i like the way the books are stacked between 2 pieces of wood with a piece of twine to secure them. and i *really* like that rusty old L bracket secured to the corner of the box. i’ll file away these ideas for some future project, kind thanks for sharing!

  20. I too disapprove of this hack. I could never sleep in a room with this thing sitting on the wall. Don’t mean to hate but it’s not a hack – it’s some kind of, well, art.

  24. IkeaHacker seems to be scraping the bottom of the barrel lately. What’s the hack? That the Kvart lights weren’t mounted directly to a wall? Who approves this stuff?
