Materials: Pax, Table saw, Hammer,

Description: Pretty straight forward hack. I just cut the bottom of the PAX off and set it on a recessed base.

Instead of using that glorified cardboard back board that comes with the PAX I installed 5mm tempered glass to match the sliding door glass.

Then I trimmed it with matte anodized aluminum angle, again to match the doors.

I’ve also wired it with LEDs on the inside. So when the doors open they help illuminate the inside.

This allows sunlight to filter through. Which is a natural virus and bacteria killer. So any thing that you brought into your house on your clothes or shoes get sterilized and there are no strange odors in your closet.

  2. I’m living in China. Any spot that is dark (zero light) and damp, grows. All my designs include an element of sum light and airflow.

  3. torsional rigidity. Good question. The glass adds a lot of rigidity but it also adds wieght which in this design needs to be corrected for. I’m going to add 2 beams that span the bottom for the increased loading. I’m post some pics when I make this modification.

  4. Phil. Exactly, 5% to 10%. Its not about the rate of light that come through it’s about the time of exposure. 100% over the time the clothes spend in the light would destroy many of the fabrics.

  5. I used a table saw to cut the angle. But hang on tight because aluminum is a soft metal and will gall and bite. The safer and recommended way would be ask the store or use a metal hacksaw.

  6. Wonderful looking hack, I can see it really adds light to the room. Really nicely executed too. However, there won’t be any sterilization going on since it’s the UV in sunlight that does that and most common glass blocks about 95% of UV radiation from the sun (hence why you can’t get a tan in cars with the windows up or in glass houses). If it were made with sheets of PVC then it would be a different story though. Still, PVC doesn’t look nearly as nice as glass.

  7. What was the thinking behind modifying the base? Has it made the unit less stable? In the picture it looks awfully top heavy. Have you anchored it in some way?

  8. Great to see this–I’m just about to do the exact same thing in our entryway. Only real concern is the rigidity of the Pax frames, when not physically connected to the back wall. How did you connect the back glass/frames, and is torsional rigidity an issue at all for you?

  9. How hard is it to cut aluminum angle? I wasn’t sure if some sort of miter saw was used, if they cut it in the store, etc. I’m not familiar with cutting any type of metal.

    Also, how did you attach the aluminum angle to the PAX? Some kind of glue, or screws?

    This looks really nice and tasteful.

  10. That’s a pretty egregious misuse of the word “sterilized”!

    I wouldn’t mind seeing a hack whereby someone uses Pax to build an attractive autoclave surround, however. 😉
