Description: RAST hack was a hack to turn the plain pine dresser into matching bedside tables for our bedroom.

  2. That has to be the most awesome RAST hack that I have ever seen!!! I’m inspired!!! Don’t let me find a RAST in the AS-IS section again. It would be on!!!!

  5. Thanks for the feature! We love our end tables.

    The cost of the end table was about $60 ($120 for both)each, once we bought the rast and the supplies.
    -We got knobs for $1.99 each (used a 50% off coupon)
    -the paint was left over from another project and we just mixed it to get a cream color
    -the top was pine boards that were the cheap kind from the hardware store (about $3.00 each, we bought 2 –not select wood so it is quite a bit cheaper)
    -We already had the stain and poly from another project.
    -The lattice is very cheap to buy, but was the most costly for this project.
    -The base trim below was used from mudroom bench we recently completed, but we did need a few more feet.

    Looking at end tables we quickly realized that we would not be able to afford what we wanted, for size and function. PB has end tables anywhere from $200-$400.
    -PB’s Mason $400
    -PB’s Stratton $250
    (Not to mention shipping and tax.)

    We had to buy two for either side of the bed, so double those prices, and it can get quite costly. With doing this hack, we were able to customize the color of the paint and stain, which made it “fit” in to our room a lot nicer. We have other wood furniture, and we were able to customize our stain to make it work. Plus, we were able to find just the right knobs…and with patience, use a coupone to save about $12.

    We are so pleased with the outcome, and realize that we did spend some money on this hack, but think we still came out ahead if we bought new.

  7. Well done! I love it! I’ve already hacked my RAST side tables but am so inspired by yours that I’m going to do some tweaking to ‘upgrade’! Thanks for posting!

  9. Very nicely done, although I’d have tried to find a way to mitre the edging of the top.

    For the person who can’t understand why Erin did this:
    — in Australia Rast is A$50 each
    — a French provincial style bedside table or nightstand can cost $700+. Even in pine, ready for painting you’d pay more than $50.
    — the timber, knobs & paint really didn’t cost that much, maybe as much as $50.

    So for A$150 all up, they ended up with 2 pieces of furniture that fitted the space: 300 deep is good next to a bed.

    A mere 20 euros is A$27, which means A$104 – even better.

    I think the person complaining about price needs to go shopping more often – and be really grateful they aren’t living on an island at the ends of the earth.

  10. ^According to the narrative at Erin’s site, she bought two new dressers just for this. Like poster #2 said, the result is very nice – it’s just not a cheap hack as much as a complete redo.

    Sure if you have to go out and buy all the elements its fair to ask why not buy what you like but…
    If Erin is like me, she had the Rast already and probably had quite a bit of the other elements required so why not recycle?
    I just “re-looked” our Malm bedroom, using only things I had in my “project inventory” with the exception of buying some acrylic finish.

  12. It’s nice, but… the RAST dresser is €20, and they must have spent at least twice as much on all the extra trim, knobs, top, paint, etc. Why not just spend those €60 on a dresser you like?
