Hi Hackers,

I have tried everything to dim this lamp:

Tried with tape, plastic, sharpie and nothing will dim the light.

It is glowing 40 w light which is too much to have over the dining table.

Any ideas how to dim the lights? It is made of LED and has around 12 LED’s around on the inside of the lamp.

  1. It is kind of dimmable. I have installed a remoteable dimmer in the box on top, but it is not able to dim more than 50 %, and that is not enough for me. So have also put in a White piece of paper…

  4. Option 1 would be to use a wall mounted dimmer switch of the “trailing edge” dimming type. A benefit would be that the dimming is easily adjusted. A lights vendor would be able to advise you if you provide the specs written on the dimmer. They are somewhat more expensive than the cheapest dimmers..

    Option 2 is to use a pwm dimmer installed in series with the LEDs, as the one in the the link you provided. But I think you will be outspec’ing it as the forward voltage drop of 12 LEDs in series would be ~41V. I suspect the real amount of leds are 10, giving a total of ~34V (within the specs outlined on your LED driver), but that would still mean you’ll be driving a higher voltage than the 24V max of the dimmer.

    Option 3 is to change to a 700 mA constant current driver with built in switching dimmer. Adhere to the specs on existing driver while shopping, or find someone with a multimeter and measure actual voltage drop and current over the LED circuit.

    Option 4 is to use a non-dimming lower current driver, e.g. a 350 mA one that is still able to provide sufficient forward voltage. Half the current flowing over the LED typically results in somewhat over half the amount of light intensity, as the efficacy increases. Maybe the easiest and quickest solution, but you will not be able to adjust the light intensity (e.g. dimm).

  7. White paper? Semi-opaque plastic (think place mat, file folder)? Metal mesh (window screen, art screening)? A circle just the right size should sit on that in-turned lip.

    I haven’t seen one in person. Are the bulbs inside the rim or in the peak?

  8. hi there,
    you could try modifying the lamp’s electronics to make it dimable.
    my guess is that there will be a dc power supply already built into the lamp, so you could just use that, disconnect the leds from its output and connect some form of (remote controllable) led dimmer in between.
    another option would be to replace the power supply with a dimmable led power supply that is compatible to off-the-shelf wall-mounted dimmers…
    if possible, open the lamp and show us what components and how much free space are inside… 🙂

      Thanks for helping me out here.

      So a little more information:

      The driver in the top ceiling mounted box is this one.

      It says it is dimmable to 21-35 W.

      It goes from the driver into the main cord that ends in a serial connection of a LED-strip with around 10-12 LEDs. There is no bulb but just the led strip.

      I tried to manipulate the leds with a sharpie, some tape some small plastic covers etc. but they become very warm and all started to melt.

      Now I have just ordered this cheap gadget and I hope to install that after the driver and then be able to dim the lights.

      Do you think that will work?

      Otherwise I thought of buying small LightDims to put on each led in the lamp.

      If you have other ideas please help and if you can say that dimmer i bought wont work, please let me know.

      2. IF i am right it is the driver that is dimmable and so have a google for LED dimmer switch, you can buy them at home and replace your current switch with a dimmer one.

        The in line thing might work.

        The light dims are kinda what I suggested above on facebook post. lighting gel is designed to deal with 180c+ so should be ok.

  10. I read the assembly instructions and it seems the lamp isn’t contain any bulb. I try to change the power supply to a smaller efficiency if it’s possible.
    Another idea just buy some rice paper and try to apply before the LEDs.

    1. If you are using traditional dimmers, it’s like flipping a coin…it may or may not work with LED. There are however new dimmers that are designed to be used with LED as well. As a matter of fact, a number of Ikea’s own LEDARE bulbs are dimmable.
