After working with this small IKEA desk in our apartment, we realized that the storage and work space just wasn’t cutting it. In order to accommodate space for our large printer and miscellaneous paperwork, we decided to work with the existing desk, but make it a more appropriate size and style for our space!

We created another storage cubby on the left of the desk using a $12 piece of MDF from Home Depot. We simply made an L shaped frame and added a few top supports using a KregJig.
We used 3 1×8 pieces of wood cut to size to make the new desktop and stained them with a tea, vinegar and steel wool mixture. The entire desk got a few coats of homemade chalk paint and a new handle from Home Depot, and it was done!
