Hackers Help: Need doors for 29″ Pax unit

I am looking to use a PAX wardrobe frame, the 29.5 inch wide by 93.125 inch high version, as a built in closet.

  • Does Ikea make any doors that would fit this unit?
  • Alternatively, has anyone had success cutting the wider pax doors to a narrower size?

I’m concerned about both chipping of the finish and exposure of the interior particle board.  Thank you.

  1. I’m not sure of the wisdom of asking a single set of Euro hinges (and Ikea hinges are NOT Blume hinges) to support the heaviest of door options – a mirror door.

  2. Unfortunately in Canada, there aren’t the right doors on IKEA’s site to fit the 29″ pax closet frames. HOWEVER, what I did is use the smaller Forsand door (width: 9″ 7/8) in combination with the larger Forsand door (width: 19″ 1/2). I haven’t put it together yet but it should hopefully work!

    I also had a pre existing 39″ pax frame which I will be putting in between two 29″ frames and using Tussedal doors. This make the overall closet look prettier and you don’t notice the smaller forsand doors.

  3. I am looking for the same answer. I found the VIKEDAL door in the 9-7/8″ and the VIKEDAL door in the 19-5/8″ comes out to exactly 29-1/2″. I’m just not sure if I would like the look of that so I haven’t purchased and tried it yet.

  4. I took two BALLSTAD doors that are 50cm wide and had them cut to 37,5cm width in a local carpenter’s workshop. They fitted perfectly for the 75cm PAX body with the included hinges. I used white veneer edging tape, they iron on one, to cover the trimmed edges.

  7. Unfortunately, the 25cm vikedal mirror door doesn’t seem to be available in the U.S. The best options appear to be putting hinges on a 29″ sliding door or buying a pair of 19″ doors, and cutting them down, then sealing the cut edges.

    I guess we’ll see.

  10. The 19 5/8″ hinged doors look like they were made for this unit. (Some are 19 1/2″ wide but should work also, as both widths are listed as being 50cm, so must be just a rounding error.) Needs two. Hinges are included in the price (separate packages). Go to the IKEA site and search: Pax door 19. The length will be the ~90″ (229cm) ones. (They won’t go all the way to the floor but the Pax has a base that is about 3″ high.) And it looks like they are on sale for 15% off until the end of the month (in the US).

  12. A single 29.5″ frame can only be used as open storage. A set of two side by side accommodate the smallest of IKEA’s sliding door options at 59″ wide.

    IKEA’s hinged doors come 19″ wide (for the PAX system) but a handy person might be able to copy the hinge layout and reproduce it on a custom width door.

    All you would need is to drill out the correct hole pattern with a Forstner bit and secure it with standard IKEA door hinges (3 pack for a 79 inch door, 4 pack for a 92 inch door). The positioning of the holes is the hard part.
