Hackers Help: How to make a flip top for IKEA Brimnes Headboard?

Does anyone have a solution for making the entire top of the IKEA Brimnes headboard either removable or hinged so that it could flip up?  I would like to add a little board in the back and the bottom of those two empty spaces to create some blanket storage.

All of that dead space in the back of that headboard must be useable somehow!

    Don’t attache the top and use 3 or 4 kitchen cabinet hinges. Screw them in the corner between the top and the headboard.

  2. I have that headboard and I never even attached the top for the same reason (storage). I just lift it off when I need access.

    Originally I was going to hinge it somehow, but since it’s been working just fine like this for more than 3 years I’m not going to bother. No issues.

  3. This was something I was exploring not for blankets but to store decorative pillows at night and sleeping pillows during the day. I ultimately went with a different bed, but here’s what I was thinking: Assemble the headboard* without attaching it to the wall. To form a center piece and a top to each of the shelf units, place a pencil mark on the underneath side of the top where it meets the back of each of the shelf units, then remove the top and cut on the lines with a miter saw to get a perfectly square cut (I wouldn’t try this freehand). Paint all raw wood edges to match. Attach the now smaller tops to the shelves using the cam locks as usual. The center piece would be turned 180deg so that the cutouts for the cords would act as finger hole handles. I was going to use a furring strip the full length of the headboard (painted to match) attached to the wall, level at the height of the headboard (so it would give a solid piece to attach the center piece’s hinge and the shelf units using the wall anchors (instead of directly to the wall) and allow a space that gives the flipped up top an offset angle so it can lean against the wall a bit when opened, as well as two vertical pieces along the wall side of the front edge of each shelf unit to fill the gap. I was going to use a piano hinge to attach the top edge that doesn’t have the cord cutouts to the furring strip in order to use the cutouts as finger hole handles at the headboard side. The wooden dowels [p/n 101345] in the center support would have to be omitted. You can remove the center brace if you choose, but I intended to leave it so it will help hold the top up and provide individual compartments for each side’s pillows. Some additional furring strips would be placed along the back of the headboard for the front edge of the center piece to rest on (making sure to leave a gap where the cord cutouts are so your fingers can reach in to open the top). I was also going to put a piece of plywood between the bottoms of the shelves so that the pillows wouldn’t fall all the way through. This would also allow the space under the shelves to be free to store some longer items that I have that I don’t need access to daily. Hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck!
