Hackers Help: Help fitting doors to Pax wardrobe with Komplement drawers at the bottom…

I know I shouldn’t, but I’ve fitted drawers into the bottom of my Pax wardrobes and now (obviously) can’t fit the hinges to the bottom of the doors.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any low profile 35mm concealed hinges that would work with the drawer – that are available in the UK.

  1. I found it easier to relocate the hinge hole in the door. I used to drill the 35 hole with a Forster bit, but found that after about 6 holes it starts to blunt meaning you have to put a lot of pressure on it to make it cut. I now use a router and home made template which is so much easier.

  2. I used the Richelieu hinges… and also ‘routed’ (using a rotary wood rasp+drill) a small channel to avoid all contact with the drawer sides and front. Then painted white – doesn’t show, works fine.
    I have 2 packs of 2 Richelieu BP91M25521180 hinges, brought from Canada.
    Willing to post for £10 each pack (2 hinges)… almost cover my cost. proddick2@gmail

  3. So I got the Richelieu BP91M25521180 hinges from homedepot.com and installed them in the Pax. The holes had to be drilled a bit bigger to fit the Ikea Komplement hinge screws, as the original hacker stated. All that went fine and the new hinge indeed can provide enough clearance to allow the drawer to be at the bottom. But be forewarned that in order to adjust the hinge to have the clearance for the drawer, the doors will end up with a larger gap in the middle…. and unless you adjust the top Komplement hinge, the gap will be uneven. The clearance you get at the bottom drawer is also very minimal. I imagine over time, the sides of the bottom drawer might scrape the hinge if you aren’t gentle opening & closing.

    It was a hard decision, but as much as my wife wanted the drawer to be at the bottom, given the larger door gap and worrying about the risk of the side of the bottom drawer getting scraped, we opted to change our configuration to have the wire basket at the bottom instead.

  4. I ran into the same problem and found another website where a person successfully resolved it by installing hinges made by Richelieu, model #BP91M25521180. They said they replaced the screws with the ones from Ikea Komplement hinge after drilling slightly larger mounting holes in the replacement hinge.
    I couldn’t find this Richelieu hinge in stores but is available from Home Depot’s online store so I will order and try it and hope to report back success.

  5. You just need a carpenters holesaw and you can make your own holes in the door for the hinges.
    I got one from the hardware store and after measuring it up and aligning it, I carefully drilled a just enough depth for it to fit.

  6. I just went through the exact same problem, but I don’t believe there are any hinges on the market that will do what you want. Instead, we’re going to use a router and rout out a channel where the hinge hits the drawer. We’ll either paint it white to hide it or insert a plastic channel (depending on how deep we have to go and how compromised the side of the drawer is.

  7. Maybe you can attach the included hinges just above the drawers. All depending on how high the drawers are.
    You will have to drill 3 new homes to the door. Not going through the door, obviously! 🙂

  8. We mounted our drawers one drawer-height off the bottom of the wardrobes. That gave us shoe storage across the bottom of the wardrobes, and gave access to the holes to mount doors, if we wanted to in the future. In the end we never did install doors… We liked the look of the wardrobes without them.
