Move over, Swedish meatballs! There’s a new star at IKEA, and he’s not made of particleboard. In a plot twist that would make even the most complicated assembly instructions jealous, IKEA has crowned the winner of its first-ever global talent show.
Thomas Penninger, an Austrian employee who usually spends his days mastering the art of “goods flow”, has won the hearts and votes of his fellow co-workers with his original song, “This Is Our Love.”
The contest, aptly named “IKEA Talents,” saw 150 employees from 21 countries competing to prove they’re more than just experts at wielding Allen wrenches. In a finale that was probably more nail-biting than trying to fit that couch through your front door, 23 finalists battled it out for musical supremacy.
Ingka Group CEO Jesper Brodin gushed about the competition’s success. He praised the event for “strengthening togetherness” and empowering creativity and passion. “I’m so impressed by the broad engagement, and the amazing winner, Thomas, showcasing extraordinary talent – making me feel like I’m a part of something truly special”, added Brodin.
Recording Where ABBA Did

As his grand prize, Thomas will get to record his winning song at Stockholm’s Atlantis Music Studio, the same place where ABBA laid down their hits. “Amazing, what a big surprise! It will certainly be an indescribable experience to record where ABBA and co. have already worked. I’m really looking forward to this experience and to being able to record my song there. Really cool!” says Thomas on his win. Joining Thomas at the recording studio will be the other top 5 acts of the contest.
Thomas’ music career started at age five when he learned to play the recorder, which was quickly followed by the guitar. He has spent time playing in a band, writing his own songs, and recording and producing professionally. Thomas joined IKEA last year and combines this with his work as a music producer.
IKEA Talents winner Thomas finished: “I believe this competition gives people the opportunity to grow beyond themselves and become creative. I for sure like to be able to share my passion with a large audience, and winning is a confirmation of the quality of my work.”
