When IKEA unveiled the KALLAX series in 2014 as the successor to the beloved EXPEDIT line, it swiftly rose to become a staple in home organization. The KALLAX’s genius lay in its simplicity: a modular system of cube shelves that could be customized with practical inserts, adapting to virtually any storage need.
But KALLAX’s true potential was unleashed in the hands of creative DIY enthusiasts. Ingenious IKEA hackers repurposed KALLAX units into everything from stylish storage chests and kitchen islands to surprisingly comfortable bed frames. The KALLAX proved to be not just a piece of furniture, but a starting point for imagination.
Now, in a move that’s sure to delight both organizing aficionados and DIY mavens, IKEA has expanded the KALLAX range with several exciting new additions. A recent browse of the IKEA website revealed these fresh designs, proving that even the most iconic products can evolve. These new pieces promise to offer even more versatility, functionality, and opportunities for modifications, cementing KALLAX’s status as the go-to item for IKEA hacks.
New! KALLAX Shelf Unit (article number 405.620.79)

First up is the KALLAX shelving unit, which breaks away from the traditional cube design. This fresh take features uneven grid shelves, offering a more dynamic and visually interesting storage solution. IKEA hackers, start your engines – this asymmetrical design opens up a world of possibilities for customization and unique displays.
We’re particularly smitten with this new KALLAX in its upright position, especially when paired with the KALLAX underframe: an easy solution for a contemporary display cabinet. The deep green color option adds an extra layer of sophistication, making it an eye-catching piece with a modern edge.
The only drawback is you won’t be able to use the standard IKEA inserts in the smaller grids. But if you’re using it to display your books or collections, it may be a non-issue.
New! KALLAX Desk (article number 305.824.45)

Next, IKEA introduces the standalone KALLAX desk, a practical addition that carries the line’s signature boxy aesthetic. Unlike the old KALLAX desk system which required attaching an IKEA desk (like the LINNMON or LAGKAPTEN) to the shelving unit, this new compact desk stands on its own. You have the freedom to place this desk anywhere, independent of other KALLAX pieces, offering greater flexibility in room layouts and design schemes.
With a shallow depth of a mere 15⅜”, the desk is ideal for small spaces or positioned in a dedicated nook for kids’ homework. The smart under-table cable management system is a thoughtful detail to keep things tidy.
We love that the side unit of the desk is fully compatible with KALLAX doors, boxes, and inserts, allowing for personalization options. Who knows? We might soon see KALLAX desk setups that double as miniature terrariums or hidden cocktail bars.
New! KALLAX TV Bench (article number 905.748.81)

Last but certainly not least is the KALLAX TV unit, which has quickly climbed to bestseller status. The spacious shelves provide ample room for gaming consoles, DVD players, and other media devices while maintaining the sleek, minimalist aesthetic that KALLAX is known for. This addition is the answer to KALLAX TV unit hacks we’ve seen over the years. Now, we just need a door insert with speaker fabric that allows remote signals through.
We’re already buzzing with ideas for this unit. If you stand it in an upright position, it could be turned into useful entryway furniture. Use the slim vertical spaces for hanging jackets or scarves. Fill the cubes with storage baskets for gloves, socks, keys, etc.
After nearly a decade of the KALLAX line remaining largely unchanged, these new pieces represent a welcome refresh that has rejuvenated interest in the series.
Will IKEA continue to surprise us with innovative additions to the KALLAX? We can only wait on the edge of our POÄNG chairs for the next big reveal, whenever that may be. In the meantime, one thing is certain: creative DIYers will continue to push the boundaries of what KALLAX can be and we know it can be anything, not just square.
