It’s the one collection all others are measured against: the STOCKHOLM, otherwise known as the “best of IKEA”. On April 10, this premier collection will unveil another 96 pieces that promise to push IKEA’s boundaries of democratic design.

This new drop, marking the eighth edition, celebrates the 40th anniversary of STOCKHOLM and is set to be the largest collection yet.

“The purpose of the STOCKHOLM collections has always been to prove that high quality doesn’t need to come at an intimidating cost,” says Karin Gustavsson, Creative Leader for STOCKHOLM 2025. Together with three Swedish designers, each with different but complementary form languages, they create a cohesive collection, while ensuring unique pieces that shine on their own.

IKEA STOCKHOLM 2025 Sofas

What has me particularly intrigued are the two completely different sofas anchoring the collection. Designer Ola Wihlborg’s wide modular option addresses a common frustration – cushions that need constant fluffing.

After 30 prototypes, he’s created a “sofa that maintains its shape and looks the same even after you stand up from sitting in it. Something that prioritizes comfort without needing extra pillows.” Two side units create a loveseat, while single modules can be used as-is or added to the side units for a 3-seater or longer sectional.

The sofa comes in 4 colorways: a warm, grounding beige, a moody dark brown, a crisp white, and a sumptuous dark turquoise for the brave ones.

Foam-Free Sofa Design

Meanwhile, Nike Karlsson’s alternative approach echoes the silhouette of Niels Gammelgaard’s current STOCKHOLM sofa, but introduces a revolutionary twist. Built on a solid pine frame, this innovative design marks IKEA’s first foam-free sofa – featuring 100% cotton weave filled with coconut fibers and pocket springs. “It makes this satisfying sound when you sit,” Karlsson explains. “That’s quality you can feel and hear.”

Natural Materials

Speaking of Nike Karlsson, anyone who remembers the sought-after rattan cabinet from STOCKHOLM 2017 will be pleased to know he’s designed a new sliding-door cabinet featuring a surface woven from rattan fibers, tied, bent, and shaped by hand. It’s a beauty!

Rattan is also used in the backrest of one of the dining chairs, while the lounge chair is built around a robust rattan frame and topped with a deep cushion in a light Bouclé.

The dedication to materials throughout this collection is impressive. The designers worked with a Swedish pine supplier to source the highest quality pine, challenging the notion that it’s merely a budget material. The bentwood chairs showcase traditional craftsmanship, with beech wood soaked and carefully bent by hand to create those signature curved forms.

Scandinavian Fabric Motifs

For the home textiles enthusiast, Paulin Machado’s designs bring nature indoors with handwoven wool rugs featuring birch tree patterns in various colorways. Her lampshades adorned with leaf and mushroom prints and merino wool blankets in multi-colored patterns feel like a sophisticated nod to Scandinavian landscapes.

Retro Tubular Chandeliers

And then, there are the chandeliers. Despite being the most challenging products to design, Karlsson persevered through numerous wood and fabric iterations before settling on glass. The result is a classic, elegant design with a retro feel that perfectly embodies the STOCKHOLM aesthetic. The thoughtful touch? Each chandelier comes with white gloves to ensure fingerprint-free assembly.

Tableware and Accent Pieces

The tableware selection includes glazed stone plates and bowls, alongside a series of glasses that complement the larger design story. And I’m especially looking forward to seeing the statement vases – two mouth-blown and one ceramic black amorphous design – each with its own unique character.

The STOCKHOLM collection has always represented investment pieces that age beautifully, and this 2025 edition appears to continue that tradition with designs that possess an organic, lived-in feel. “We wanted this collection to feel like a home that’s been collected over time, even if you buy all the pieces at once,” says Karlsson.

Gustavsson ends with this sentiment, “I hope the pieces in this collection become “forever furniture”, ageing beautifully as part of a personal and living home.”
