I make a lot of props for theatre productions, and I’ve found that ideas ignite in the most unexpected of places. For example, when splashing around with pool noodles, I thought how cool it would be to turn them into a giant sea anemone for our school’s production of Finding Nemo, Jr.
So when DIY enthusiast Aeschinoer discovered inspiration to create their lunar landscape hack in a school activity, it made perfect sense. That’s what’s so fun about art, DIY, and creating — you can find inspiration anywhere, and it can strike at any time.
Aeschinoer uses several IKEA products, along with paint and wood, to create their stellar lunar landscape, which in turn inspired a stylish, back-lit mirror. But that’s for later.

Create Moon-Inspired Wall Art Using IKEA Items
1. Paint Technique

First, paint the trays and coasters black. Mix some black and white paint to create a few grays, then sponge the various shades onto the trays and coasters. Finally, use a toothbrush to add white flecks and stars as desired.

2. Make Wood Supports for the Cork

Cut out a couple of wood rounds and glue them behind the cork pieces so they stand out from the wall. Create a hole in the center of the wood for hanging the coasters.
3. Hang Trays and Coasters
Decide on the pattern you want to create with your trays and coasters, and mark the areas on the wall. Mount four screws, one on each spot, to hang each piece. You’ll also need to add a hole in the tray to hang it.
4. Finish With Lights

Place the LED strip around your “moons.” Use adhesive strips as needed to keep the strip against the wall.
How much does this hack cost? Approximately $70 to $85 (VATTENSTEN LED strip — $14.99, 3-Pack HEAT coasters — $5.99, SNUDDA tray — $19.99 (x2), plus paint and additional supplies)
How long did it take? About 2 to 3 hours
The hackers said the most challenging part was letting their son paint the moon, but they wouldn’t change a thing, and the fam loves it! I think it looks great, and like the creator, I love the backlighting it provides. What do you think?
