Want to Put a Mini Rave Inside Your Coffee Table? There’s a Hack for That!

Have you ever been so into a vacation that you don’t realize until afterward that you forgot to take pictures? I’ve done something similar with some past organizing projects. I don’t remember until I’m snapping the after pics that I forgot to take the before pics. (Oops!)

Well, Piers Helm ART (@piers_helm_art) did the same thing when they created this really cool coffee table hack. (We featured the first rave table, so check it out!) They forgot to film a “making of” video, so they decided to do it again!

Inspired by an event he attended at the Engineerium in Brighton, hosted by the DJ Sean Johnston, Piers hacked an old IKEA RAMVIK, creating a rave inside a coffee table.

It’s definitely a statement piece, complete with laser lights, and is sure to start many conversations.

What You’ll Need

  • IKEA RAMVIK (or similar) coffee table
  • 3D-printed figures and accessories
  • Jigsaw
  • Masking tape
  • Adhesive
  • Spray Paint
  • Laser party light
  • Mini smoke machine
  • Durable glass top

How to Recreate the Rave Table

1. Prep the Table

Assemble the table if necessary, then remove the drawers. Measure and mark a rectangle on top, using masking tape. Cut out an opening in the top with the jigsaw, then clean and remove any sawdust.

2. Create the Display

Piers is a talented 2D and 3D artist and designer who created the pieces for his display. If you aren’t familiar with 3D printing, you could find someone to help you with this part. Or, another option is to try sourcing the pieces you need for your display.

Spray paint all components so they are all one light color. The lighter color really maximizes the visibility of the laser lights. Place everything where you want it, and secure it in place with adhesive (Piers used hot glue).

3. Install the Lights and Effects

Position the laser party light, smoke machine, and any other effects you plan to use. I’d think that battery-operated pieces that use a remote to operate are your best option, so you don’t have to hassle with cords.

4. Fix the Ends and Add the Glass

If the table you used had drawers at the ends, secure the ends to close up the table. You could use the drawer fronts since they’ll be the right size.

Make sure the end of the table with the lights and the smoke machine remains accessible. Consider making the side removable or a flip-down with hinges so you can change batteries, make adjustments, etc.

Finally, add glass on top. You likely need to cut out a groove to rest the glass in and secure it with adhesive.

A Table That Tells a Story

Every time Piers looks at his rave table, he remembers an exciting, amazing experience that he had. It’s a great way to create a memorable piece that adds a personal level to his design. The finished table is definitely unique, and it’s clear that Piers is extremely talented. (Check out the working zoetrope and this other project!)

Even if you aren’t a 3D designer, there are some great ideas here that you could try out. The idea of creating a scene or display inside the coffee table is a lot of fun.

You could use figurines and small accessories, think doll house furniture or miniatures, to make your scene. The spray paint idea is an easy way to tie everything together and make it more subtle.

But it all depends on what look you’re going for. I think this hack is a great way to show what is possible, and you can use it as inspiration to make something your own.

What do you think? If you could make a table that tells a story about your life, what would it say? If you have a hack to share, we’d love to see it!
