The easiest hidden TV idea yet—perfect for small spaces and minimalist bedrooms.
Apparently, you’re supposed to keep TV out of the bedroom because the bedroom is just for sleeping and, well, you know. But let’s get real. Plenty of us like to binge our favorite shows until our eyelids give up the fight.
If having a TV in your room is non-negotiable, then we’ve got the hack for you!
This clever hidden TV hack means you can maintain a peaceful, dare we say, even romantic, mood in the bedroom without sacrificing your late-night Netflix marathons.
Reddit u/Spense01 shows off an easy way to tuck your television out of sight inside an IKEA PAX closet.
They originally had a 55” screen mounted on the wall, but they needed to get a larger wardrobe. This hack gave them a way to have both and hide the TV, too!
How to Create a Hidden TV setup in a PAX Closet
What You’ll Need
- PAX wardrobe frame
- KOMPLEMENT pull-out shelf
- Drawer slides
- Timber
- Folding TV mount
- Basics — screw gun, drill, tape measure
1. Assemble the PAX
Put together your PAX wardrobe according to your needs and IKEA instructions. For the purposes of this hack, make sure the frame size you choose is wide enough to accommodate your flat screen TV. The hacker’s screen is 42 inches.
2. Set Up the Shelf
Use a slide-out KOPLEMENT shelf as the stand for your TV. Install timber braces to the shelf so you have a place to attach the drawer slides. Attach a square of wood to the slides, then install the folding TV mount on the wood.
3. Attach the TV
Attach the TV according to the instructions that come with the mount. Then slide out and fold up the TV whenever it’s time to watch your favorite show. The OP says that there’s even enough vertical clearance when the TV is in its folded position to keep a console or two (but that could push things over the max load — more on this below).
Is the TV Okay There?
The top concerns in the comments were about how safe it is to store the TV flat. Many people thought this wasn’t good for the TV, and others worried about hangers falling on the screen and breaking it. Another worry was how much weight the shelf could hold.
Well, so far, Spense01 hasn’t had any problems. The shelf is rated to hold about 22 pounds, so just pay attention to the weight of the TV you choose (and don’t forget about the weight of the mount). Because you might be reaching max capacity once the TV is mounted, adding consoles may not be possible.
As for things falling on the screen, after posting the hack, Spense01 added a shelf above it so that the TV is sandwiched when it’s stored away. The shelf acts as a protective barrier, keeping the screen safe from falling items and the OP’s curious cat.
Is Being Flat Good for a Flatscreen?
Finally, regarding storing the TV flat being bad for it, most users said that was the case with old plasma TVs. Others said it’s also more for when transporting TVs during shipping — that’s when storing them flat is a no-no.
So, these are all things to be aware of, since there seems to be a bit of a debate. Spense01’s response to whether storing the TV flat was a good idea was simply, “I guess we’ll find out.”
What do you think of this hidden TV hack? Is it something you’d want to try so you could sneak a TV into your room?
