Hacker help: Creating a sectional from 2 Klippans?

Hi there. This isn’t a hack, but a question: Has anyone hacked two Klippan sofas into a corner sectional? Not having a Klippan (yet!), I can’t even tell if it would be possible. Any advice/suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks!

Hi Dorothy,
I’ve yet to see one. The only sectional is this with Pallbo footstools (pic, left). Thoughts, anyone?

  1. I have every intention of making a corner sofa out of two klippans when
    I move in a couple of months, we have one of the big ones at the moment but I’m planning on fitting a normal sized one to it 🙂 I’ll document it but if anyone else has any info, gratefully recieved

  2. I’m actually going to give this a go with a klippan footstool as the corner piece and 3 loveseats (two one-armed, one armless) to make an asymmetrical sectional for my bowling-alley living room. This will, of course, require some ‘surgery’ on the frames to add support on the armless ends (thinking brace frame, THEN remove arms). I have repaired the flimsy wood framework in the arms of our Ektorp sectional before so I’m optimistic that it can be done. The center section will also have a separate slipcover from the two long sides, so the cambered ends meeting should resemble the look of a sofa with detached cushions. The really tricky part, IMO, will be recycling the unused arm materials to create a right-angled back for the corner section. Another potential pitfall is that the footstool cushion is supported by a sheet of mdf rather than springs; this could cause an unsuspecting sitter to plop down too hard and end up with a sore rear. I will report back with photos once I get these issue resolved and start hacking 🙂

  3. It’s a pain, but i think you can make it work. Our Tylosand was sagging (the wood) horribly after a few years of use. So i took 4 4×6 fence posts spray painted them black and cut them to fit under the frame. It is basically a box. Put the Tylosand section on top and screwed it all in (without the legs). It is about 1/2 an inch taller than the other Tylosand sections. My plan is to do this to the other sections eventually. I’ll link to pictures when i get home. Maybe even turning one into a chest underneath.

  4. Klippans do have a slight camber, so it wouldn’t be ideal. In the current models, the legs are attached to the arms, so you would need to build a base for the corner or there wouldn’t be enough support for the sofa. (Older models were different, my partner had a one-armed older Klippan for years after one of the arms fell off and it looked fine, but current models would fall over with one arm.)

  5. I don’t think that’s a good idea Dorothy, and I don’t think it will work.. I’ve been using clippan in my office and at home for 4 years. They’re ok, but like most of the sofas, all the parts (seat, back, etc.) are attached to the arms. If you take anyone of the arms off, all the balance will be lost and the seat will be on the floor.
    Hope you can find another way for a good hack:)

  7. The ones I have from 2007 come part into pieces easy enough. Take one arm off with the bolts, then drill new bolt holes and add it as an angle. You would have to cut the fabric too. Maybe add a 4 ply base to mount a leg to?
    The insides are not the same on all of them so if you can check.

  8. I don’t think it would work. Klippans have a camber to their seat – it’s high along the middle, low along the front and back, so I don’t think it would connect well with another at right angles.
