Materials: Malm, Alsarp

Description: I saw this on a blog. This combines the Malm with the Alsarp and seems fairly easy to accomplish. It looks like a great solution for storage under a Malm bed, which doesn’t have much storage space under it when put together the “normal” way. It also makes the Alsarp more aesthetically pleasing.

  1. Does this Malm lift bed storage available in Canada? I already have a double Malm bed frame with slats, can the lift up frame be added up?

  2. Is there a way to do similar but make a Murphy Bed from an Ikea Hack? this ottoman style only goes up enough to give access to the storage, not get the bed up and out of the way

  3. I’ve just bought the same combination from Ikea Bristol as I saw it there, I got the malm double frame for the alsarp to go in to. It’s to fit my 5ft mattress that don’t fit Ikea beds so the edges will sit on the maln sides. Was also told Ikea are bringing out a proper malm lift up bed in April for those who are interested.

  4. Hi there.

    This is really cool.
    My wife and myself have a small apartment without too much of a storage space. We thought of buying a bad to our room and we saw the MALM. the downside is the lack of under-bed storage.

    The problem is…. we have a 160cm wide mattress.
    Is there a way to harness this solution to fit a 160cm wide mattress ?

  5. I bought and built the Sultan Alsarp for my Queen Malm frame 2 nights ago. If you remove all the metal support pieces for the intended slats, it fits perfectly. There are no issues with height of the foundation or with using the underbed storage – it’s absolutely perfect.

    The only thing to keep in mind is that the box’s cloth (which wraps around the sides) is white and will be slightly visible. Depending on what color your malm frame is, that might bother you. I’m sure there’s an easy aesthetic solution to that though.

  10. I did this with the twin bed, and while it fits nicely, there is nothing holding the sideboards to the head and footboards. Bumping into the frame the wrong way can dislodge the pieces and it falls apart. Otherwise I love the way it looks it my room, and I have no need for a dresser anymore!

    Oh and for all those asking about dust, it hasn’t been a problem for me so far after 4 months. Dust doesn’t really travel through mattresses all that well :p

  11. My husband and I did this with our Queen sized Malm bed. Once I got the foundation built, the frame slipped around it perfectly. Between the mattress and a 2 inch mattress pad, we have about six inches of headboard visible, which still looks quite good. To lift it up fully made does take a little effort, but the hydraulics on foundation help out enough to make it a manageable task.

  12. I’ve looked at the Malm bed for several years, but keep hoping that Ikea will come up with something similar, only with four pull out drawers (two on each side) on the bottom. There’s lots of space under the bed and this sort of option would be a real boon for those with a small bedroom.

  13. We actually bought a bed like this in Japan, but after a mold issue we decided storing things near the head of the bed was a bad idea. If you can keep your house properly heated, this shouldn’t be a problem, otherwise just be aware.

  14. Has anyone tried this with the queen-sized version of both pieces? Based on Ikea’s width measurements for the full-sized versions, there was 3/8″ to spare across. (The storage box being just slightly narrower than the inside of the bed frame.) But looking at the same measurements for the Queen-sized version of each piece, the width measurements are identical (59 7/8″), leaving no room to spare at all. I’m scared to buy the queen-sized versions, drag them home, assemble them both only to find out the box is just a hair too big to fit inside the frame.

  20. That’s really nice. I kind of wish we could do that with our Malm but it’s already got a Hasselhof (or whatever it’s called) Sultan mattress that’s about a foot thick + a 7 inch memory foam pad on top so if all that were raised up to the level of the bed frame then we’d be lying above the headboard!

  21. I’m really curious as to how well it works if the mattress is butted up against the head board. Is there room for it to rotate when it’s lifted or does it just compress the mattress at the headboard?

  22. my partner has the same bed, not ikeahacked. he bought it with his sleeping room forniture some 10years ago. they’re kind of popular in italy, maybe flou has it too, nathalie or others….and i think you know flou!

    1. It wasn’t a problem in L.A., but since we live in the rainforest now, I lift it up & run the dehumidifier occasionally. Plus I frequently flip & rotate my mattress.
