Materials: Faktum

Description: Finally we are having a proper shoe cabinet to hide away shoes – after living in this home for some 9 years.

Bought 2 units of Ikea Kitchen wall cabinet, fastened them together side to side. Got myself 6 solid wood cabinet feet and mounted on the base of cabinet.

I painted on the interior side of the backboard turquoise, just to give it a bit of a surprise within – and keeping loud colours subtle.

Then I bought 2 units of these Chinese Brassplates from Internet and mounted them on the cabinet doors to serve as door pulls.

The result is kind of a modern cabinet with a little vintage feel to it.

  1. Ah, sorry for the late replies…

    @Kate: I doubt so. These are kitchen cabinets that can take quite a bit of weight. But the thing about bench is that it must be able to take lateral motion. Imaging someone sitting on it, then there’ll be certain amount of sideway sways. The mountings on the side walls of the cabinet would probably break.
    It will probably work if it is installed against 2 wall at the sides. But you should choose shorter cabinets that will eventually give you more vertical panels to take the weight of a person.

    @Marina: I use 2 units of 70cm (h) * 80cm (l) * 38 cm (d) and fastened them together side by side.

    @Jo: I have thought of that. But the thing about Faktum cabinets are: Other than the doors, Other panels are in white. Having a white cabinet with red doors makes it look modern. So that will reduce the suggestion of anything Chinese. (Chinese cabinets usually do not have different coloured doors. Even if they do, the doors usually do not occupy the full front panel of the cabinets.

  2. not that i’m really into chinese, but it is nice.
    what if you choose the red faktum? i mean, like this one, looking similar to chinese red lacquered.
    could maybe be even better if you had corner and other brass plates?

  4. Do you think the cabinets are strong enough to be used as a bench? I would love to do this, but as shoe storage and bench at the door entryway.
