Hackers Help: Can I extend the JANSJO Lamp Flex?

Hiya,

I’ve just bought my wife a Jansjo lamp, and am wanting to extend the lead from the switch to the lamp.

But, IKEA say ‘The external flexible cable or cord cannot be replaced – If so the lamp will be destroyed’

Is this correct? – Has anybody tried it?

  4. Hello,
    IKEA regarding lanpade always says not to change the cable, but I have changed on various lamps including JANSJÖ lamp and everything works perfectly. Everything depends on the length and thickness of the cable you use. Being a LED lamp cable must comply with the construction characteristics, you can lengthen or shorten a little, but keep the respect thickness. If you do not meet these guidelines lamp may flash and / or issue a low light even when turned off.

  7. It should be fairly straightforward to do. I once replaced a worn on/off switch on the cord of a different JANSJÖ-model without any problems. I think the switch is also the easiest “point of attack”, if you want to extend the cord.

    The switch is made of two halves, that are fairly easy to pry apart with a dull knife.
    You can then unscrew the cord from the switch, and insert an extension wire instead.

    At the end of the extension you can join the extension and old wires with a screw terminal.

    Remember to use the correct polarity (plus connect to plus, minus to minus) in the screw terminal.
    Otherwise the lamp won’t work.

    When reassembled it could look somethink like this:
    Lamp – cord – switch – extension – screw terminal – rest of cord – plug

    Fortunately the JANSJÖ lamps use a low voltage (6 volts I think), so there is no danger of electrocuting anybody as long as you don’t mess with the transformer itself.

    1. Actually I think that the plug and the female connector on the extension cable for the SKRUV lighting system fits the one on JANSJÖ lamps. They sure look identical:

      If they fit, it is probably the easiest way of doing it. The lamp might shine a bit less brightly because of the increased electrical resistance of the long cable though, because of the low voltage.

  8. I would have to agree with IKEA. I bought the same light but the clamp-on version. After inspecting the construction, i don’t see anyway of moving the switch or extending the length without destroying the lamp. I would suggest buying an extension cord with switch. These are available at home DIY centers.

  10. On the one I have, the connection on the power block is similar to a loudspeaker jack. So I guess you could add a loudspeaker cord similar to this :

  12. You can easily extend the two wires using appropriately sized wire, the phrase destroying the lamp is because of the possibility of swapping the wires around (leds are polarity sensitive). As long as you don’t swap the wires as you are extending them you’ll be fine.
    The other issue is voltage drop over the length of wire but if your only extending it by a few metres it shouldn’t be much of an issue.

    The connector some variations of this particular series uses is a standard connector for old speaker systems so you may be able to extend without butchering the wires?
