Have you heard the phrase, “If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck?” It basically means you can confidently identify something based on its features. Makes sense. But then came the IKEA HOLMERUD side table.
IKEA’s HOLMERUD side table joined the line-up in 2024 after the successful intro of the HOLMERUD coffee table in the fall of 2023. People loved the retro-like style, warm wood tone, and sleek design, and it provides ample open storage. (Oh, and did I mention, it’s only $49.99?!)
Since its introduction, folks have discovered plenty more ways to test the table’s versatility. Its unique architectural design makes it a statement piece as a side table, console, bookshelf, and more. But don’t take it from me.
Check out these five other ways you can put the IKEA HOLMERUD side table to work in your home.
Surround Your Sofa With IKEA HOLMERUD Shelves
@tremont_home When IKEA hits, it really does hit. Very happy with the nestle-y, built in, conversation pit feeling we got from wrapping four of these Holmerud shelving units around our sectional. $200 well spent baby!!!!! #ikeahacks #affordablehomedecor #realhomesoftiktok @IKEA @IKEA USA ♬ Moi je joue – Brigitte Bardot
One of the more common ways people seem to use these popular side tables is as sofa shelving. Delaney | Vintage & interiors show how they continued their HOLMERUD side table around the back of their sectional, using multiple pieces. The result is a stylish series of shelves surrounding the sofa.
The idea is simple, but the effect is impressive. It gives the room an elevated look and provides excellent storage and display space. This particular project uses four of the tables, but you could use more or fewer depending on the size of the sofa you’re working with.
Stack Them Up

One Reddit user (Falafel-my-waffle) decided to stack two HOLMERUD side tables to create a drop zone. This concept would also work if you wanted to create a funky bookshelf or have a unique way to display some of your favorite collectibles or decor.
Based on the comments, it doesn’t appear they secured the units together, but I think it would be a good idea to do so. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, right? You could use braces in the back where the shelves meet, and for extra stability, secure the unit to the wall.
Give Your HOLMERUD a Facelift

One of the things IKEA fans wish for the HOLMERUD table is that it came in more finishes. Currently, you can get the piece in a dark brown or an oak finish. But that doesn’t mean you can’t give your table a makeover to achieve the look and color you want.
At least, that’s what Reddit user blik8503 did. They placed two side tables side by side to create a sofa table (and accidental cat cranny), painting it dark green and topping it with dramatic marble. If you decide to paint your HOLMERUD tables, the creator recommends lightly sanding the surface first and using a universal primer.
Is It a Side Table or a Sofa Table?

If you like the HOLMERUD in its original IKEA finish, then no need to paint or make any changes. All you need to do is decide how you want to use it.
That’s exactly what’s behind the question that TikTok user, maorta.exe, poses. Will you use your HOLMERUD as a side table or sofa console? Try out both and see what works best in your space.
To try out the console look, place two (or more) tables side by side for a quick sofa console. Which way do you like better?
Turn It Into a TV Console
The sofa console look might be one of the most popular ways people are using the HOLMERUD side table, but it’s not the only one. Mili Jain @mili.inthecity turns three of the tables into a long, sleek media console under the television.
To give the final result a more custom look, they also removed one of the shelves. Overall, it was a great solution for getting a 90-inch-long media console without spending a ton of money.
