Hackers Help: Make IKEA Hopen Corner Wardrobe Kid Friendly?

I am looking for ideas to make this IKEA Hopen wardrobe that we already own kid friendly for a 2 and almost 4 year old and is no longer sold by Ikea so they don’t have add on accessories. The bar is too high and it has no drawers but would love some ideas.

  1. What do you plan on storing in it, clothes or toys or both ?
    What are the inside measurements ? Is there space around where it will go that things can be added to the outside as well as changing the inside ?
    First think about using the shelves as the tops for benches on the outside of each side, at the heights comfortable for a 2 yr old and the 4 yr old. Underneath fit cubbie boxes to hold their shoes and slippers etc. These can be adjusted as they get bigger.
    Install black boards or whiteboards on the outside of the walls to hold the childrens’ art work.
    And super important, secure it very well to the studs in the walls whereever you are going to put it.
    And measure the highest reach that the kids each have at this point in their growth as belongings that you want them to get themselves should be comfortable for them to grab so that they don’t try climbing on things to get them and cause a fall or the unit to fall on them.

  3. I don’t know much about this. Could you put it on its side, add a tension bar between the seat and shelf, and put some baskets in the bottom empty space? I don’t know if it would be too deep to reach the bar or not, but that might be an easily workable temporary method until the kids get big enough to use it as is. Otherwise I would just say add shelves.

  4. I second Gunda! I would just add shelves, lots of them. You can use the bottom shelf for the 2yo, and a higher one for the 4yo, or double up as needed. Maybe some of the wardrobe accessories can be fitted over the shelves to help keep things tidy. Or even use book shelves separators to categorise clothes. Use baskets underneath to store small items or shoes, and more baskets at the top for things you want out of reach… The world is your oyster!

  7. Anything is possible with these. Even using just normal white shelves will work as the dark and light contrast go well together. also, perhaps the Kallax range will offer something for this also.
