IKEA hackers have been turning the BILLY bookcases into everything from bar cabinets to mudrooms, pushing the boundaries of this beloved bookshelf. Well, it looks like IKEA has been taking notes.
They’ve recently introduced a new add-on to the range: an IKEA Bookcase Desk, which, in my books, is a cheeky nod to the DIY IKEA hacking community.
IKEA’s Small Space Desk And Storage Solution

This add-on isn’t just any desk; it’s a space-saving WFH component that seamlessly fits into your BILLY bookcase, creating an efficient desk and storage solution. By day, it’s a pop-out workspace; by night, it’s a cozy dining table for two.
And when all is done, push it back in, and voilà —it recedes into the background—well, almost.
The BILLY desk add-on is sold for $50 in the U.S., even cheaper than the compact MICKE desk. Nevertheless, it won’t stand alone, as the runners that allow the desk to be pushed in and pulled out need to be installed to the BILLY frame.
Material-wise, IKEA cuts it from the same particleboard as the BILLY. However, the support rails and the front two legs, which need to be sturdy, are made from solid pine. That’s good for us DIYers, as it means you can quite easily strip off the white acrylic paint from the legs, stain or paint them, and personalize them.
How high is the IKEA bookcase desk?
The table height is 29 1/2”. You need to install the slides to the 8th and 9th dowel holes on the BILLY frame, counting down from the fixed middle shelf.
Will it fit older BILLY bookcases?
IKEA makes no mention of this, but we think it should fit the standard 31 1/2” wide BILLY, even older versions. Let us know in the comments if that’s not the case.
Will the doors work with it?

You can install short BILLY doors on the upper section of the bookcase. Open shelves are best for the area under the desk.
Will the BILLY drawer work with the desk?
The BILLY drawer will fit but may be cumbersome to access as the legs will be in the way.
Where should I add the IKEA BILLY Bookcase Desk?
The IKEA desk add-on offers a practical solution for those seeking to incorporate desk space without compromising storage.
If you already have a row of BILLY bookshelves in your home library, integrating a desk is a practical addition. A desk provides a convenient surface for browsing books, taking notes, or engaging in research, creating a more cohesive and efficient study or reading area.
In children’s rooms, it provides a dedicated study area that doesn’t permanently occupy floor space. Home offices in spare bedrooms can also benefit from this setup, allowing the room to quickly transition back to guest accommodations when required.
You could even set it up in the kitchen for an impromptu recipe-reading stand or in the hallway for a pop-up command center.

Other Ways to Add A Desk to The IKEA BILLY Bookcase
IKEA BILLY Bookshelf Desk Hack

In 2011, Lena shared her clever BILLY desk concept with us, which is a simpler alternative to IKEA’s current design. Her approach utilized L-brackets attached to the BILLY frame to support a wooden board, complemented by two VIKA KAJ table legs at the front. While this idea remains practical, modern updates could elevate its style.
Consider using a solid wood board with striking grain patterns and pairing it with more contemporary legs, such as the sleek HILVER model, to refresh the look. If IKEA’s new BILLY desk doesn’t quite meet your needs, Lena’s DIY version is a versatile option that allows for greater flexibility in creating a workspace that fits your home and work style.
Hidden Desk In BILLY Bookshelf

If you prefer a wholly hidden WFH setup, then this stealthy IKEA bookcase desk hack is for you. The desk part extends out when pulled down and is supported by hinges and brackets. When closed, it looks like a regular BILLY bookcase. Read more about the secret BILLY bureau.
A “Clip-on” Temporary Desk

This hack is a fantastic idea for a guest room, or anywhere else you need a temporary workspace. Alfredo aimed to build a small, cheap desk that he could pack away when guests required the room. His brilliant idea was to use the LINNMON table top and “clip” onto a BILLY shelf when necessary. This method does not damage the bookcase; he can easily store the desk away until needed.
