Hackers Help: Help Ernesto turn this bedroom into a functional space

This is Ernesto G.

We have a bedroom sized 166 x 117 inches (421.64×297.17cm) and we have a platform bed (not IKEA) and a BRIMNES headboard with storage compartment, black (302.691.72) that we cut down by about 7 inches to be flush with the window.

There’s a little LACK Coffee table, white (000.950.36) which was oddly turned into a little desk.

My request: we need to turn this place into a more functional bedroom with a little work area.

The bed: 87×57 inches (220.98×144.78cm) this is must keep. The mirror is a STAVE.

Thoughts?

  1. I would replace the desk with one that fits entirely across the window wall. IKEA has cheap countertops you can easily cut to length. Rest the countertop on some chest of drawers like MALM or ALEX that are great for storage (seen here: https://ikeahackers.net/2016/03/complete-workstation-desk-home-office-ikea-hack.html), or some cabinets for a more clean look (seen here: https://ikeahackers.net/2016/05/classiest-sit-stand-desk-hack-ever.html). Keep the clutter in the cabinets, and make sure everything on top of the desk is pretty and well organized.
    I personally think a bedroom should be kept as simple as possible. The countertop-drawer combo across 1 wall would make the workspace feel like one seemless entity, a small desk and some bookcases scattered all over the bedroom would feel crammed – at least for a scandinavian :). If you need the extra storage shelves could be installed over (or next to) the window.

    Other tips would be to hang the mirror (it really makes a difference), get some art over the bed, and maybe include some plants to bring some life into the room.

  2. Take a look at the “bed bridge bookcase” hack from February 26, 2016. It looks like you have room for tall bookcases or cabinets by the sides of the bed. Also, how about adding some low cabinets under the window? It would make use of the space under there. Add some colour with a bed spread and a rug.

    I used a program to work on a room layout for your bedroom (it’s implemented in the German IKEA hey.de official community website). Just follow the link below to see the plan.
    Regarding the colours:
    green: beedrom storage
    pink: workspace storage
    orange: (new) desk and chair [imho 90cm are way too small for a proper work space]
    blue: bed
    white: area rug

    Of course I’d stick to less colours (like 2 + 1 or 2 more for bedding). Especially the PAX wardrobes should be a bright colour since they’re massive furniture. Dark colours make the room appear smaller.

    P.S.: a rug that’s 220-250cm wide would be even better than the one I used.

  4. My desk is always a mess so I try to have a seperate office/junk/storage room. Otherwise I would expand on Sara’s idea to play with arrangment and then drapes, paint and some art work.

    I would try and see if you like the bed with the headboard under the window-it will give the room a focal point.

    then just play around with the mirror and desk and place them where you like best…
