Looking to create a charming coffee bar in a small space? Take inspiration from this clever IKEA hack by Lexie Zhu or more popularly known by her Instagram handle @mengmengliving. With a few simple modifications, she transformed a plain and super affordable BAGGEBO cabinet into a cute coffee cabinet that has all the right Cafecore vibes.
“I like the storage potential of the cabinet, but I didn’t really like the basic look of the product,” she says of the BAGGEBO. After the hack, Lexie is glad to have retained the cabinet’s storage capacity while giving it a more upscale and unique look.
Supplies:
- IKEA BAGGEBO cabinet with door (19 5/8×11 3/4×31 1/2″)
- Top panel (BESTÅ shelf, oak veneer, 47 1/4×16 1/2″)
- EKET Leg, wood, 3 7/8″
- Door knob (optional)
DIY Coffee Cabinet In 4 Easy Steps

Step 1: Add legs
First, assemble the cabinet as per IKEA instructions. Then, to recreate this ingenious IKEA BAGGEBO hack, start by completely inverting the cabinet. Attach the EKET legs to what was originally the top panel of the BAGGEBO cabinet using the original toolkit. This elevates the piece to a more comfortable counter height and gives it a more refined, furniture-like appearance. Choose legs that complement your decor style – sleek metal for a modern look or wooden for a warmer feel.
Step 2: Flip the coffee cabinet
Now, flip the cabinet and set it on its new feet. With the unit upside down, the former legs become the new sides to prop up the countertop.
Step 3: Add a countertop

Next, turn your attention to creating a new top surface. Add a panel that fits the dimensions of the now-open upper side of the cabinet. Lexie used a BESTÅ shelf trimmed to around 20.5″ x 11.5″ (53 x 30 cm) to fit the cabinet’s size. The cut section may be finished with edge banding.
Connect the top panel with the BAGGEBO frame with a few small angle brackets.
Other than the BESTÅ shelf, this top piece could be a piece of wood cut to size, perhaps stained or painted to match your vision. This new top transforms the former bottom of the cabinet into a countertop for your coffee stand setup.
Step 4: Change the knob
Finally, put the finishing touch on your creation by swapping out the original knob. In this case, a vibrant red knob was chosen, adding a pop of color and personality to the piece. The “Unexpected Red Theory” really comes alive in this hack. Choose a knob that speaks to your style – whether it’s bold and colorful or subtle and sophisticated.
With these modifications complete, your ordinary BAGGEBO coffee station is ready for styling.
Coffee Styling

Lexie placed an espresso machine on top of her newly minted coffee cabinet and added mugs and cups to the open shelf. A tray next to the coffee maker holds her Moka Pot and coffee beans.
She also hung adorable coffee artwork above to personalize the space and positioned a plant on a colorful side table for a touch of nature.
Her followers love the flip, and many plan to do the same.
“I have one in my kitchen, I guess I’m going to flip it now!”
“Such a great idea at the right time. Needed something like this.”
“I have this same piece and was planning to use it as a bedside table, but this is a great idea!”
Lexie’s clever IKEA hack is one of those ideas that makes you smile and think, “Now, why didn’t I come up with that?” It’s amazing how flipping a cabinet upside down can create something so cute and useful. Sometimes, the simplest ideas really are the best.
But this may not be the last we see of her coffee cabinet hack. She ends with this: “I thought about painting the white portions in another color, but I kind of like the current look, so it might be something I will do in the future.”
