This DIY barrel costume idea is quick, creative, and budget-friendly.
Rebecca’s son wanted something unique for trick-or-treating, and she turned to IKEA for an unexpected solution.
The result? A toxic waste barrel costume that’s fun, comfortable, and easy to make in under an hour.
How to Make the Barrel Costume

What You’ll Need
To recreate this clever barrel costume, you’ll need just a few simple supplies:
- IKEA DIMPA hamper (or any lightweight round bin)
- Utility knife or scissors
- Yellow spray paint
- Black paint or marker (for hazard symbols)
- Black T-shirt and pants to wear underneath
- Optional: Green paint or neon fabric paint (to mimic “toxic slime”)
- Optional: Scary face mask
1. Cut the Openings
Start by cutting out a hole at the top for the head and two on the sides for the arms. The IKEA DIMPA hamper is flexible enough to cut easily with scissors. If you’re using the DIMPA sorting bin, remove the handles as well.
2. Paint the Barrel
Spray paint the entire hamper yellow for that hazard warning feel. Once it’s dry, paint the toxic icon at the center of the barrel. It’s up to you how you wish to embellish the costume; you can also add warning signs or the word “TOXIC” for extra flair.
3. Add straps (optional)
For extra comfort, add shoulder straps inside so the barrel stays in place while walking.
Make it More Toxic

1. Add Slime
Rebecca stopped at the toxic icon, but you totally take this up to the next level. Drip or paint green slime coming out from the top and down the sides. You can even use glow-in-the-dark paint for a spooky effect!
2. Face the Role
Have your child wear a melting face mask to complete the barrel of toxic waste costume look.
Now isn’t that a barrel of fun!
